U.S. Defense Secretary States
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times this past week, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates had been quoted as saying, most of the European forces were not properly trained to retain the upper hand in counterinsurgency: "We have some military forces that don't know how to do counterinsurgency operations". After criticism within the NATO alliance as well as specific questioning of the American ambassador in the Netherlands, Mr. Gates retracted that statement and even called the Dutch defense secretary to apologize.
