Angela Merkel: "Israels Security is for me as
German Federal Chancellor Never Negotiable"
Her appearence before the Knesset, the Israeli parliament on Tuesday was not without controversy. But only 5 legislators in the 120-member body stayed away from the speech, partly because it was held in German, the "language of the torturers of victims and survivors of the Holocaust ... SS officers, camp commanders and the Gestapo". Besides that, Angela Merkel received praise for her words. Several listeners, among them Jewish organizations in Germany, said that the speech had "historic dimensions".
