a Euro-Study: Students With Computers
Much Better Learners

Improvements are clearly measurable in all important learning subjects. Learning results are best when students have computer access in class as well as at home. This has just been published in Europe as the result of a new international study by OECD, the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development. In Germany, it was found that in mathematics, 15 year olds with computer access turned out to ahead of students without computer usage by almost 1 year.

The differences in successful learning were even more pronounced, when computer experience was subject of questioning. In Germany, 15-year-old students with less than one year of computer experience were usually behind in mathematics by more than two years, when compared with others of the same age, but with 3-5 years of PC experience.

Student access to computers has increased dramatically in all OECD countries that participated in the study. This is true for computer access in the classroom as well as at home. In over 90% of German families with 15 year old students, computers are readily available. Slightly less than 80% of the computers were connected to the Internet.

Worldwide, girls by using computers less often than boys. Boys also enjoy computer games and programming activities more. Germany is one of the countries where differences like that are particularly pronounced. Girls are less confident, when they are working in front of computers, and they are not as comfortable when asked to solve complex problems or to put multimedia presentations together.

Marianne Demmer, vice chairperson of the teachers union in Germany complained recently, that boys and girls don't have equal chances in Germany yet, when in comes to computer learning. Not all schools have been successful in this area. More than 20% off 15 year olds still do not have much of an idea, when it comes to using computers as learning aids. It is feared that say will suffer major disadvantages in their further education and when it comes to finding a job.
