a Robots Meeting Most Enthusiastic Playmates:
Your Kids

Celebrated in Japan as "robot babysitters" - they are not yet ready to take over responsibilities from adults, when parents are not at home. But robots have grown up to become interesting playmates for kids in department stores, "kindergärten" - even private households, when parents can afford them. They now even remember children's names, read stories to them, play games and teach kids to interact with technology. There is no doubt, that robots nowadays will hardly find more enthusiastic users than children - and, more and more, according to experts: It seems they have turned out to possess certain talents to be teachers as well. It will pay to develop them further.

Japanese department store managers, in particular, seem to consider robot babysitters to be almost godsent, when shopoholics can occupy their kids for a while and enjoy trying on clothing, for example, without worry. Of course, taking care of children is not the only agenda on their list. In the future, more sophisticated robots will even guide customers through the facility, tell them jokes, direct their attention to special sales and deals. They will also be multiligual and might even carry packages for them.

But this is something that will be introduced in years, if not decades from now. Presently, Aeon's department store in the southern Japanese city of Fukuoka features a child-sized robot named Tmusk. He talks and tries to listen to children left by shoppers. To help him with the interaction, each child receives a specific badge with personal information, that the robot can read electronically, and adjust its behavior.

Now, keep in mind, this is just the beginning. An entirely new industry, introducing robots for a large number of different uses, is in the process of being created. And, sooner or later, artificial intelligence in going to be a necessary ingredient.

There is certainly a lot of money going to be made, selling robots to the public, and providing the more and more advanced hardware and software to go with them. At this time, the Japanese companions for children, with limited capabilities, can be bought for amounts between $5,000 and $7,000.
